The Cyclam product range originally dates from 1941 when a self taught engineering genius, Maxime Amirault, developed and patented a revolutionary new type of mechanical seal. Amirault, seeking production facilities for his product formed an alliance with Paul Destomieux, who owned a engineering factory primarily producing bicycles and Cyclam s.a. was born.
Right from the start the Cyclam product was a great success, especially in the European automotive market where there had never been a suitable low cost seal to replace the packed glands still in use by car manufacturers for their water pumps. Volumes of production reached more than one million seals per month, with the company becoming the market leader throughout Europe. In the early 1970’s the company became part of Fratelli Borletti, an Italian manufacturing group, and was later absorbed by Magneti Marelli, the electromechanical component division of FIAT.
Today the company is a division of John Crane EMA, a division of the Smith’s Group and is the leading manufacturer of compact mechanical seals, plus seal assemblies to fit DIN / ISO / AFNOR housings and high volumes of seals for the automotive and domestic equipment markets.
Quality has always been a strong factor in Cyclam’s production and the company, in addition to ISO 9000 also has accreditation to the much more demanding ISO/TS 16949 international quality standard which is more stringent than, and supercedes the previous QS 9000, widely used in the automotive industry.
Following the expiry of the patents on the original seal designs a number of copies of the product, generally of Italian or far eastern origin have come onto the market, but are only available in a limited range of sizes and materials and, in our experience, of inferior quality to the Cyclam product.
Chenderit Ltd. are the sole importer and distributor of Cyclam industrial seals into the United Kingdom.
The Cyclam product range includes both rotating seals and stationary seats plus stationary automotive seals, seats and unitised assemblies
